About

Stephen Nomura Schible was born and raised in Tokyo and studied film at New York University. After completing his studies, he worked as a producer’s rep for Japanese films such as EUREKA (directed by Shinji Aoyama) and FIREFLY (directed by Naomi Kawase) which garnered esteem, distribution, and financing through the international art house circuit. Subsequently he oversaw international co-productions between Japan and the West, ultimately becoming one of the producers for Sofia Coppola’s Oscar winning LOST IN TRANSLATION, and was responsible for all Japanese aspects of the film. Thereafter Stephen directed/produced the music documentary ERIC CLAPTON: SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J, which aired on the BBC and PBS among many other networks around the world. Stephen recently produced RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA, which was also his first theatrical feature film as a director. CODA premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was subsequently released internationally during 2018. It was selected as a New York Times Critic’s Pick, gained a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and was nominated in 3 categories for the 2018 Critic’s Choice Documentary Awards in the US. It was also selected for a handful of best of 2018 lists by esteemed publications in the US and Europe, including The Telegraph and Indiewire. In Japan, Stephen won the prestigious Houchi Film Award Special Prize for CODA, together with Takeshi Kitano, for his outstanding achievement as a director. CODA was also awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Culture as an outstanding achievement in documentary filmmaking— while winning awards and nominations in Europe as well. Most recently Stephen directed/produced RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: async AT THE PARK AVENUE ARMORY, a companion concert film to CODA. This companion film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2018. Stephen currently resides in New York while continuing to produce, direct, and write creative content for multiple platforms together with a select network of collaborators and clientele in the US, Japan, and elsewhere.
