RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA

One of the most important artists of our era, Ryuichi Sakamoto has had a prolific career spanning over four decades, from techno-pop stardom to Oscar-winning film composer. The evolution of his music has coincided with his life journeys. Following Fukushima, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan’s social movement against nuclear power. As Sakamoto returns to music following cancer, his haunting awareness of environmental and life crises leads to a resounding new masterpiece. RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA is an intimate documentary portrait of both the artist and the man— hailed as “one of the finest documentaries ever made about the creative process” by Robbie Collins of The Telegraph.

CODA premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was subsequently released internationally during 2018. It was selected as a New York Times Critic’s Pick, gained a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and was nominated in 3 categories for the 2018 Critic’s Choice Documentary Awards in the US. It was also selected for a handful of best of 2018 lists by esteemed publications in the US and Europe, including The Telegraph and Indiewire. In Japan, CODA won the prestigious Houchi Film Award Special Prize for outstanding achievement in directing. CODA was also awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Culture as an outstanding achievement in documentary filmmaking—while winning awards and nominations in Europe as well.
